Idly / Dosa / Gund pongal (yerappe/mulka – in konkani) are one of the best soft foods that can be given to kids. The ingredients used to prepare this batter is almost the same.One should only take care of the proportion and the batter consistency. Can be given for both breakfast and as evening snacks.My mom always says,’Growing kids need a little extra calories for all those gymnastics they do. So don’t just get done with rusk/biscuits for snacks, give him something more solid.’


  • Rice : An excellent source of carbohydrates, low in fat, cholesterol, gluten free. Rice is also rich in essential amino acids and some of them are needed in times of stress.
  • Urad dal : A rich protein source .The best benefit of urad dal is that it enhances digestion because of its rich fiber content. It boasts of two kinds of dietary fiber including insoluble and soluble fiber . The soluble fiber normally quickens digestion while the insoluble fiber aids in preventing constipation and increasing stool bulk.
  • Methi seeds/fenugreek seeds : Fenugreek seeds aid in improving digestion and curing constipation. They are rich in protein, vitamin C, niacin, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron and sodium.
  • Channa dal : Contains high fiber and a lower glycemic index.


  • 2 cup Rice
  • 1 cup Urad dal
  • 3-4 methi seeds
  • 2 tspn channa dal
  • salt to taste



Soak Rice + Urad dal +Methi seeds+channa dal for 10- 12 hoursGP6

Add water little by little , and grind everything together to a fine batter. The consistency of the batter should be little thinner than that of idly batter.Add salt to the batter and mix well.Leave the batter to ferment for an other 10- 12 hours 

Heat tava, Sprinkle a few drops of water ,the water should sizzle and evaporate away . This means the pan is hot enough to make dosas.Grease a little oil on tava .Pour a ladle of batter using very little pressure, swirl the ladle in concentric circles, to spread out the batter. When the batter is fully spread, spray a few drops of vegetable oil all over the dosa. Cook on medium-high heat till the bottom side of the dosa becomes lightly brown.

Note : I soak the ingredients @ 9:00 A.M and grind it @ 9:00 P.M and then use the batter the next day @ 9:00 A.M.So its worth the wait, this 24 hr process will give your kid those nice soft Dosas.
