Rava Upma

                 Upma usually goes as a evening snack because @ home no one really likes to have this for breakfast. The ‘Khara bath – kesari bath’ is ‘THE COMBINATION’ that can be found in almost all darshinis in karnataka.


  • 1 cup Bansi rava/Sooji rava
  • 2.5 cups of water
  • 2 tspn of ghee
  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 1/4 cup carrot
  • 1/4 cup beans
  • 1/4 cup capsicum
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 1-2 slit green chilly
  • a pinch of turmeric
  • few cashews roasted

To Temper:

  • 1/4 tspn of mustard seeds

  • 3-4 curry leaves

  • 1/2 tspn of urad dal

Method:                                                                                                                                                                            In a thick bottom pan , add 2 tspn of ghee and roast bansi rava until golden brown and keep aside

                                  In the same pan, heat 3 tspn of vegetable oil, add mustard seeds, allow it to sputter, now add urad dal – sauté it until it is light brown, then add curry leaves + green chilly + onion + ginger. Sauté till the onion turns golden brown.Add rest of the vegetables + turmeric and sauté for 3 mins                                Now add water and bring to boil (untll the vegetables are cooked), simmer the flame , add rava and cook until it is done.

                            Finally add roasted cashews. This is best served with khara boondi
