Shavige Upma

Upma or upittu can be made out of anything.All ingredients remains the same only the base ingredient keeps changing. The most common base ingredient used to make upma is : Bansi rava / sooji rava . Click here for Bansi rava upma recipe.


  • 1 cup shavige
  • 2.5 cups of water
  • 2 tspn of ghee
  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 1/4 cup carrot
  • 1/4 cup beans
  • 1/4 cup capsicum
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 1-2 slit green chilly
  • a pinch of turmeric
  • few cashews roasted

To Temper :

  • 1/4 tspn of mustard seeds
  • 3-4 curry leaves
  • 1/2 tspn of urad dal


In a thick bottom pan , add 2 tspn of ghee and roast shavige until golden brown and keep aside                                         

In the same pan, heat 3 tspn of vegetable oil, add mustard seeds, allow it to sputter, now add urad dal – saute until it is light brown, then add curry leaves + green chilly + onion+ginger. Sauté till the onion turns golden brown                   

  Add rest of the vegetables + turmeric and sauté for 3 mins                                                                                            

Now add water and bring to boil (until vegetables are cooked), simmer the flame and add shavige and cook until it is done                                                                                                                                                                               

  Finally add roasted cashews
